Mike Jones of Fantasy Sports Writers Association mounted what is officially the greatest comeback of all time in the history of the 411Fantasy.com Expert’s Contest.
Hyperbole aside and never mind that this is only the third year in the contest’s existence – facts are facts.
Jones rallied from fourth place overall to take down the field in Week 17 with a 17-point effort to close the .31 gap (and then some) between him and Week 16 leader John Paulsen of the The Scores Report. Paulsen and previous second- place contender Ken Zalis (Fans Fantasy Football) each posted 10 points, dropping them to second and fourth respectively, while Jones’ score rose .23 points, enough to win by .16 of a point with an average score of 13.56 per week.
The Final Four:
Jones (FSWA) 13.56
Paulson (The Scores Report) 13.4
Jared Smola (DraftSharks) 13.38
Zalis (Fans FF) 13.19
Jones hovered in and out of the top five much of the season, holding a three-week lead in Weeks 6-8, slipped to eighth in Weeks 11 and 12, then rallied to fifth in Week 13. More impressive is that Jones’ title comes one year after he placed second overall last season, by far giving him the best average finish among returning candidates.
“(The contest) definitely was a grinder,” Jones said. “After coming in second last year, I’m glad to get over the hump this year.”
Jones’ Week 17 score sheet included three points for RBs Arian Foster (+1) and Ryan Mathews, two for Peyton Manning at the No. 4 spot, four points at TE by placing Vernon Davis and Owen Daniels in their proper spots, a point each for kickers Nate Kaeding, Adam Vinateiri and Olindo Mare, a clutch point for picking the 49ers defense (the only expert to do so) and four points for answering two multiple choice questions (Josh Freeman and Ryan Torain).
Jones bested Jeremy Odem (Nova Fantasy Sports) by one point, 411’s Adam Conn by two and Jeff Boggis (Fantasy Sports Empires) and Paul Greco (Fantasy Pros 911) by three. Ross Mandel (NFL Draft Bible) and Eric Karabell (ESPN) tied for sixth with 13 apiece.

Jones, a-la Big Papi, was clutch when it mattered most
Jones has been in the fantasy industry for 15 years and is the commissioner for all FSWA Industry Insider Fantasy Leagues (baseball and football) while overseeing and managing the participation of over 100 industry contributors.
In “real” life he was recently promoted to Manager of a new venture of Books-a-Million, Inc. called 2nd & Charles, in Augusta, GA. The only downside is that his new responsibilities may result in scaling back his fantasy football ambitions.
“I’m not sure how much time I’ll have for fantasy sports in the future, so it was nice of the Fantasy Gods to send me out on a high note,” he said.
The 2010 “411Fatasy.com Expert’s Contest” included 46 distinguished members from the industry. As we’ve done every week, we’d like to acknowledge those who finished in the upper half and thank everyone again for their participation and support.

The 411
In 2009 Jones finished second out of 35 participants. This year he was the best out of 46…. Smola has placed in the top 10 in every year of the contest. He placed fifth in 2008, ninth last year and third this season. He’s easily a heavy favorite in 2011…. Boggis now has two top tens in a row. He tied for third last year and placed eighth this season…. In 2008 Roto Experts dominated the top ten with five representatives; Last year Fantasy Phenoms held the majority of reps; This season CBS gurus Eisenberg and Richard were the only repeat representatives, placing ninth and tied for 10th respectively…. Here are the results of the previous two years: 2009; 2008…. With continued support from our esteemed colleagues we hope the contest cracks the 50+ member barrier next season.
