Bills vs. Oilers, 1993; Reggie Miller vs. N.Y. Knicks, 1995; Sox vs. Yankees, 2004; Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo, 2005; Flyers vs. Bruins, 2010; Mike Jones, Experts Contest, 2011…?

Mike Jones of Fantasy Sports Writers Association mounted what is officially the greatest comeback of all time in the history of the 411Fantasy.com Expert’s Contest.

Hyperbole aside and never mind that this is only the third year in the contest’s existence – facts are facts.

Jones rallied from fourth place overall to take down the field in Week 17 with a 17-point effort to close the .31 gap (and then some) between him and Week 16 leader John Paulsen of the The Scores Report. Paulsen and previous second- place contender Ken Zalis (Fans Fantasy Football) each posted 10 points, dropping them to second and fourth respectively, while Jones’ score rose .23 points, enough to win by .16 of a point with an average score of 13.56 per week.

The Final Four:
Jones (FSWA) 13.56
Paulson (The Scores Report) 13.4
Jared Smola (DraftSharks) 13.38
Zalis (Fans FF) 13.19

Jones hovered in and out of the top five much of the season, holding a three-week lead in Weeks 6-8, slipped to eighth in Weeks 11 and 12, then rallied to fifth in Week 13. More impressive is that Jones’ title comes one year after he placed second overall last season, by far giving him the best average finish among returning candidates.

“(The contest) definitely was a grinder,” Jones said. “After coming in second last year, I’m glad to get over the hump this year.”

Jones’ Week 17 score sheet included three points for RBs Arian Foster (+1) and Ryan Mathews, two for Peyton Manning at the No. 4 spot, four points at TE by placing Vernon Davis and Owen Daniels in their proper spots, a point each for kickers Nate Kaeding, Adam Vinateiri and Olindo Mare, a clutch point for picking the 49ers defense (the only expert to do so) and four points for answering two multiple choice questions (Josh Freeman and Ryan Torain).

Jones bested Jeremy Odem (Nova Fantasy Sports) by one point, 411’s Adam Conn by two and Jeff Boggis (Fantasy Sports Empires) and Paul Greco (Fantasy Pros 911) by three. Ross Mandel (NFL Draft Bible) and Eric Karabell (ESPN) tied for sixth with 13 apiece.

Jones, a-la Ramirez, was clutch when it mattered most

Jones, a-la Big Papi, was clutch when it mattered most

Jones has been in the fantasy industry for 15 years and is the commissioner for all FSWA Industry Insider Fantasy Leagues (baseball and football) while overseeing and managing the participation of over 100 industry contributors.

In “real” life he was recently promoted to Manager of a new venture of Books-a-Million, Inc. called 2nd & Charles, in Augusta, GA. The only downside is that his new responsibilities may result in scaling back his fantasy football ambitions.

“I’m not sure how much time I’ll have for fantasy sports in the future, so it was nice of the Fantasy Gods to send me out on a high note,” he said.

The 2010 “411Fatasy.com Expert’s Contest” included 46 distinguished members from the industry. As we’ve done every week, we’d like to acknowledge those who finished in the upper half and thank everyone again for their participation and support.

The 411

In 2009 Jones finished second out of 35 participants. This year he was the best out of 46…. Smola has placed in the top 10 in every year of the contest. He placed fifth in 2008, ninth last year and third this season. He’s easily a heavy favorite in 2011…. Boggis now has two top tens in a row. He tied for third last year and placed eighth this season…. In 2008 Roto Experts dominated the top ten with five representatives; Last year Fantasy Phenoms held the majority of reps; This season CBS gurus Eisenberg and Richard were the only repeat representatives, placing ninth and tied for 10th respectively…. Here are the results of the previous two years: 20092008…. With continued support from our esteemed colleagues we hope the contest cracks the 50+ member barrier next season.

Paulsen, Zalis, Smola and Jones in a race to the finish

Paulsen, Zalis, Smola and Jones in a race to the finish

Barring an unlikely, albeit possible, epic comeback score in the 20+ range from a near-by contender, the 2010 Fantasy Football Expert’s contest comes down to one of four finalists – Our leader John Paulsen of The Scores Report, followed by Ken Zalis of Fans Fantasy Football, Jared Smola of Draft Sharks or FSWA’s Mike Jones.

Only one, Jones, managed gain ground in Week 16. His 12 points was good for second place and enabled him to cut his deficit from .49 points to .31. Jones remains in fourth place overall which means that the gap between first and fourth place is less than one-third of a point. Paulsen and Zalis posted 10 points last week allowing Zalis to gain a minuscule .03 points on first place.

Week 16 honors belongs to Dave Richard of CBS Sports. Two things to note about Richard’s accomplishment: 1. It is his third such feat this season and 2. He is the only expert to score in double digits with every entry submitted. His latest effort earned him a spot in the top 10 overall.

In second was the aforementioned Jones with 12. The Never-Say-Die Jeff Boggis came in third with 11. Eric Karabell and Robb Perkins joined Paulsen and Zalis in fourth with 10 points while Jason Sarney, Ross Mandel and Adam Conn (411 Fantasy) tied for eighth with 9 apiece.

Anything can happen, but Week 17 appears to come down to a divided bobsled team trying to figure out where they’re going to sit. Good luck to all competitors this week. With one week to go, here is your leader board….

By Adam Conn:

With just two weeks left in the 2010 Fantasy Football Expert’s Contest, John Paulsen of the The Scores Report picked a good time to post the top score. Actually his score of 14 was a tie for first along with Mike Jones (FSWA) and Jason Sarney (Fantasy Phenoms). But Paulsen’s effort was enough to catapult him into the overall lead, edging Jared Smola (Draft Sharks) by .12 points.

Paulsen has been a model of consistency in this year’s contest, regularly posing top 5 weekly scores to stay in the hunt most of the season. As other experts rise and fall, Paulsen has been a constant presence near the top. But by no means is he secure in his position. Jones, for example, was in the lead for several weeks, dropped out of the top 5, only to see himself .49 points behind in fourth place overall. And Sarney’s rally this week puts him in sixth, giving him a chance to capitalize if he can go on another run a-la mid-season.

Close behind the above trio was Ken Zalis (Fans Fantasy Football) with 13 points. Zalis has been creeping near the lead for quite some time as well. This week he moved up one spot to No. 3 overall, just .28 points behind Paulsen.

Tied for fifth with 12 were Ross Mandel (NFL Draft Bible), Jeff Boggis (Fantasy Sports Empires) and Patrick Welsh (Fantasy Pros 911). While Smola, Adam Conn (411Fantasy) and Brad Evans (Yahoo Sports) came in eighth with 11 points.

As noted above there has been a shift in power, but many candidates remain in contention. A look at our leaderboard.

1. John Paulsen (The Scores Report) 13.92

2. Jared Smola (Draft Sharks) 13.8

3. Ken Zalis (Fans Fantasy Football) 13.64

4. Mike Jones (FSWA) 13.43

5.  Jeremy Odem (Nova Fantasy Sports) 13.31

6. Jason Sarney (Fantasy Phenoms) 13.21

By Adam Conn:

It is not the first time the 411Fantasy.com Expert’s Contest has experienced a menage, as it were. But based on the fact that Week 14 winners, Jeff Boggis (Fantasy Sports Empires), Eric Karabell (ESPN) and Robb Perkins (FF Trader), previously sat in 16, 17 and 18th place respectively we can only assume one thing – They’re into it!

Seinfeld references aside, Boggis, Karabell and Perkins made significant jumps in the overall standings, each with 16 points last week. The Sultan of Stats (or smack if you’ve been reading his facebook page the last few weeks) has cracked the Top 10. Karabell and Perkins now own the 12 and 13 slots.

Ken Zalis (Fans Fantasy Football) gained points on the overall lead with a 15-point effort, good for fourth last week. Although he remains in fourth place, he is now just .31 points off of the lead.

In fifth John Paulsen (The Scores Report) moved up an entire tenth of a point with 14 points and is now tied for second overall.

Jamey Eisenberg (CBS Sports), Jim Day (Fantasy Pros 911) and Brad Evans (Yahoo Sports) each had 13 points along with Mike Jones (FSWA), who kept pace with the leaders and remains in fifth place overall. The top three spots are separated by less than a tenth of a point… And down the stretch we come!

December 8 2010 No Commented

In a week where nearly half the experts scored in single digits, Jeremy Odem (Nova Fantasy Sports) tallied 17 and jumped to second in the overall standings of the 2010 Experts Contest. With his Week 13 victory, Odem, who authors a weekly column “Third Down and Short“, becomes the first expert to take three weekly honors while putting himself in the thick of the leader board.

Odem’s entry included four points at QB (Vick, Rodgers, Brees +1), two at RB (Foster, ADP), three at WR (Wayne +1, Jennings), a point each at TE and DST (Gates and N.Y. Giants), two at PK (Hartley and Josh Brown), and four points in the question format (Garrard and Ochocinco). Fact is, the above answers weren’t that uncommon, but he was one of just a few to have Garrard over Kyle Orton and/or Ochocinco over Johnny Knox in the multiple choice section.

Russ Bliss (Fantasy Football Starters) stood alone in second place without the help of any multiple choice questions. Rather, Bliss nailed down four bonus points in his rankings and took a few dark horse leaps with the Browns and Rams defense along with the aforementioned Brown at kicker.

A four-way tie for third followed. Mike Jones (FSWA), Matt Wirkiowski (RotoExperts), Jeff Boggis (Fantasy Sports Empires) and Robb Perkins (FF Trader) all had 13 points apiece, while John Paulsen (The Scores Report), Paul Greco (Fantasy Pros 911) and Jim Day (Fantasy Pros 911) tied for seventh place with 12 points.

Jared Smola (Draft Sharks) finished with 10 points to stay in first overall, followed by Odem, Paulsen and Ken Zalis (Fans Fantasy Football).  The best of the rest….
