Seven Random Thoughts Week 4

October 6 2009 No Commented

1. Bone spurs in both ankles and Clinton Portis not only starts, but gets 25 carries and 98 yards. I mentioned it in the Sunday Scramble, but I don’t think Portis starts (or even plays) if Zorn and the Redskins weren’t taking so much flack right now. Taking things a bit further, Portis has played the better years of his career playing with sub-par offensive lines and for an organization that doesn’t have much of a clue how to win. Portis could likely hit 10k yards for his career this season. A different better team and Portis probably enters the discussion as one of the best backs to play in the 2000’s.

2. In my dream world the NFL has a relagation system like you see in soccer if only to get the Oakland Raiders out of the NFL.

3. The Titans say that Kerry Collins is still their man and that the team’s winless streak isn’t his fault and they are right….partially. When your defense is playing as bad a the Titans you need Collins to do what he does best and ‘manage’ the game and clock. He isn’t doing that. Collins has five touchdowns to seven turnovers and he has a 68.9 quarterback rating. Nearly two turnovers a game isn’t managing anything.

4. I’ve heard a lot of people talking about how Denver’s win against the Cowboys means that they are for real because they finally beat an elite team this season. These people obviously haven’t watched the Cowboys play this season.

5. Brett Favre wasn’t the best quarterback on the field Monday night….not even close.

6. And while everybody is going ga-ga over Favre’s Monday night performance, keep in mind that he looked pretty good at the start of the season with the Jets as well.  He is doing much better than I thought he would, but how he ends the season is what matters.

7.  As a Steelers fan I hope that Mendenhall’s Week 4 performance is a sign of things to come. As a non-Steelers fan, I realize it was the Chargers.

*Bonus thought as I watch NFL Primetime*

Hey Trey Wingo, the Packers didn’t say ‘we don’t want you’ to Brett Favre in the summer of 2008. He retired. He said he didn’t have it in him to play any more. HE QUIT! Should the Lions still hold an open roster spot and starting RB job for Barry Sanders in case he decides to unretire?
