Texans RBs: Fantasy Impact

Steve Slaton is a perfect example why so many fantasy owners target rookie running backs. The Texans second-year pro entered last season buried on the team’s depth chart behind Chris Brown. He finished the season averaging 80 yards rushing, 24 yards receiving and 0.6 touchdowns per game. Those numbers are even more impressive considering that in many leagues Slaton wasn’t even drafted. This year, however, picking up Slaton isn’t going to be as cheap. The Texans’ running back is going, on average, early in the second round. Is Slaton worth it and what should we expect from Slaton this year?
Even with two pro-bowlers in the passing game (Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels) and despite 34.7 passing attempts per game last year, the Texans didn’t ignore the running game. As a team, the Texans averaged 27 rushing attempts per game, which ranked right in the middle of the pack in the NFL. Slaton will get the bulk of those carries and with a strong passing game should see few seven-man fronts, allowing him plenty of room to rack up yards. Slaton also did well as a receiver totaling 50 receptions, good enough for 8th among running backs.
To say that veteran backup Chris Brown has struggled with injuries over his seven-year career would be an understatement. Over the last three seasons, Brown has missed 30 games and has yet to complete a full 16-game schedule over his tenure in the NFL. Brown enters the season as the team’s No. 2 back, but will still get an opportunity to contribute. Head coach Gary Kubiac has stated the team intends to use Brown as a short-yardage and red-zone back. If Brown is ever to complete a full year, this is likely to be the perfect role in which for him to do it.
Slaton is the obvious choice as the team’s most valuable fantasy back. He will play in an offense where opposing defenses will be unable to key on the run and should receive the bulk of the carries. His ability as a receiver presents additional value to owners playing in PPR (points per reception) leagues. If you’re looking for Slaton to duplicate his 2008 numbers may be asking too much. Last season he was utilized in 432 plays (touches and targets). Of those 432 plays, 77 game in the red zone. With Slaton losing those carries to Brown, Slaton’s offensive yards and more importantly touchdowns, are likely to take a noticeable dip. As for Brown, unless his role in the team’s offense expands outside the red zone, he should only be considered a viable option in touchdown only leagues.
